ECKCM 2013: July 14-21

by Jane Chung

Since attending the ECKCM for the past two years, I had always been impressed with how well organized and God-centered the camp meetings have been. Imagine my surprise and delight at being invited to be on the Administrative team for the English ministries department. Although, the thought of trying to organize thirteen or so individual departments was quite daunting, the process has been made easier by several factors.

The first factor is that Pastor Jimmy Kim (Georgia), along with Pastor Kevin Kim (South Carolina) and Pastor Chris Choi (formerly of New York, now California bound) are veteran admin members. Their work in the past few years has really paved the way for a lot of the groundwork on the administrative side. Second, Elena Sandoval, newcomer and secretary for the Admin team, has done a fabulous job of keeping the communication smooth and free flowing. Third, what started out as a group whose function was singular, ended up being a wonderful friendship and support group. The A-Team, as we call ourselves, prays for each other, our own ministries as well as for the ECKCM. Personally, my weekly prayer phone calls with Elena have been a big blessing for me.

So, we feel blessed and not a little bit proud of the lineup for the speakers for ECKCM 2013. The following is a short bio of some of the speakers:

English Adults/Young Adults – Although they are two distinct groups, the English Adults and the Young Adult group will be sharing the morning and evening speakers. The speakers:

Dr. Hyveth Williams is an incredibly dynamic speaker whose healing messages of God’s grace reflect her personal testimony. A graduate of Columbia Union College with a Bachelor of Arts in Theology (1984), Pastor Williams received her Master of Divinity degree from Andrews University Theological Seminary (1989). She is the first black female senior pastor of the Seventh-Day Adventist church. She is an internationally acclaimed writer, who has written the best-selling autobiography, Will I ever Learn? Articles by Pastor Williams have appeared in Insight, Signs of the Times, Adventist Review, Ministry, Women of Spirit, Message and Celebration magazines. Dr. Williams is an excellent teacher and a compassionate counselor with a passion for the well-being of people. She is currently a professor at Andrews Theological Seminary.

Dr. David Kim is a physician at Emory Adventist Hospital in Atlanta, GA and he is an active lay-leader for New Life Church. Dr. Kim's passion is sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ and uses his role as a physician to reach out to people in his community. Mentoring people to grow in Christ and to share Christ is his highest priority in life. I have had the pleasure of seeing him facilitate the storying technique in teaching the Bible. We are employing storying in our own church and have seen some great discussions using that technique.

Collegiate-
Pastor Steven Conway is the evening speaker for the collegiate group.  He currently pastors two churches in the Michigan Conference, as well as traveling for various evangelistic engagements. He lives in the Detroit area with his wife Tammy, and their four children.
High school -

Ron Sydney, a native of St. Lucia, graduated from Canadian University College with a BA in Theology. He has served as the pastor for the Pasco-Ephesus SDA and Richland SDA church in Tri Cities, Washington for the past 5 years. He is a dynamic speaker that touches people’s hearts with his passionate and humorous take on the Christian walk. His warm, heartfelt approach really connected with the young people from ECKCM 2012. He, along with his friend and co-speaker, Tyler Stewart, were in great demand to be speakers for this year’s camp meeting.

Tyler Stewart grew up in Portland, Oregon and graduated from Walla Walla University with a BA in Theology with a minor in Biblical languages. Called to ministry while on a mission trip in Thailand in 2003, he has served as the pastor of the Eastside SDA Fellowship in Kirkland for the past 4 years. He has also served as chaplain for Puget Sound Adventist Academy. This dapper speaker made a big impression on the young people as he really showed a profound understanding for what they go through in life. His creative illustrations made the Gospel compelling and real. He and his beautiful wife welcomed a baby to their lives this past year.

Earliteens –
Henry Johnson serves as Pastor of the Greenwood and Clinton-Laurens churches in South Carolina. Prior to this, he has served as a youth pastor, missionary, Bible worker, and colporteur – experiencing the rich blessings of Jesus’ gospel commission across five continents. Abiding in God’s love and armed with a clearer understanding of Biblical faith, his greatest passion is in aiding others to experience this same transforming gospel in the practical light emanating from the cross of Calvary.

Juniors –
Richard Aguilera is a speaker who specializes in children’s’ ministry. His passion is to reveal a Being whose creations in nature point to an awesome God. Also known as the Mud Guy, he is a columnist for Guide magazine as a nature specialist. Although he graduated with a B.A. in Architecture at Andrews University, he has found his calling to be in active ministry. He loves to travel, having traveled to 49 out of the 50 US states, and 57 countries. Through his organization, “One Mustard Seed,” he loves to share the message of God’s love.

VBS–
Alexis Rivera is a Puerto Rican born in Portugal and raised in Oklahoma. She has led an active life in ministry as well as in her personal endeavors.  During her ten years of work with Wewoka Woods Adventist Summer Camps, she found her passion in mountain biking, swimming, writing, developing and leading out in spiritual programming for the youth. She chose to carry that into her professional life, getting her Bachelors of Arts in Theology at Southwestern Adventist University in 2008. Since then, God has opened many opportunities for her involvement with young people. She worked in the Oklahoma Conference as the  assistant youth director and program's director, developed and preached children's evangelistic meetings, and became involved as a children's pastor. She is currently working on her Masters in Divinity at Andrews University Theological Seminary.  Although her training is with youth, she loves to share the joy of knowing Jesus with all she comes in contact with.

As July quickly approaches, the A-team will be busy at work filling in the details for ECKCM 2013. Please pray for all the speakers, the coordinators, leaders, mentors, the A-team, attendees so that the name of Jesus will be glorified.
