Faith At Work

Attending a public school, I always prayed for an opportunity to witness to at least one friend in some way. This opportunity finally came when my brother, who attends Andrews University, came home for winter break with books that needed to be canvassed for his church in Berrien Springs.

When I went out with the books in my hands, I heard repeatedly, “Now’s not a good time; I’m not interested.” Despite these rejections, however, I prayed again for the next person to be willing to receive at least one of the books I was canvassing. I knocked; the door swung open, and the man warmly greeted me with a smile and a “Hey!” He let me share my book project, and he was the first person who let me share my testimony. Although he was not religious, he was willing to donate for a children’s book and a copy of The Desire of Ages, thinking of his family. He told me about his young son in elementary school, his son attending college for law, and the divorce he experienced. Telling me that his youngest son and girlfriend would enjoy the books, he gave me a donation for the two. Although he said he did not read much, I asked him, “Will you read this Happiness Digest when you have time?” With a nod, he said he would give it a try.

Grateful for this encounter, I was encouraged to witness to other households and received enough donations to give a Great Controversy to my close Catholic friend. I prayed for God to give me the courage to give this book to him. As a fervent reader, he assured me that he would read it.

This was my first canvassing experience, and I pray that everyone who received the books will gain a blessing from reading them.  It is a wonderful feeling to share God’s word to express his love for everyone. We have a duty as missionaries to tell others the true happiness found in God. My dream is to become a medical and musical missionary, but why not start mission work now? My prayers for occasions to work my faith have been answered. Now is the time to act and work as faithful missionaries. “Faith with no work is dead being alone” (James 2:17).
