How Do You Know You Are Doing God’s Will?

How do you know you are doing God’s will?  As in, how do you know if you are “in sync” with God?

I really appreciate this question, because it asks how we can know God’s will for our lives, not our will, and then ask God to bless our plans.  If we are “in sync” with God, we don’t receive a text message or snapchat from God letting us know that we are spiritual.  Is it only a feeling of being spiritual, or is there more concrete evidence that you are walking with God?

I think we can all agree that humanity’s purpose is to glorify God (1 Corinthians 10:31).  Since everyone has different talents and interests, how we glorify God may take different forms of expression.  Think about it; there are nearly 7 billion humans on planet earth, and no two people are exactly alike, not even twins!

“He called together his servants and entrusted his money to them while he was gone.  He gave bags of silver...dividing it in proportion to their abilities.”  (Matthew 25:14-15)
“The human body has many parts, but the many parts make up the one whole body.  So it is with the body of Christ.”  (1 Corinthians 12:12)

First, discover what talents God has given to you.  To each one of us, God has bestowed special talents, when used properly, can give glory to God.  Simply ask yourself, “What am I good at?”  Is it sports?  Cooking, art, mechanical engineering, teaching, whatever skill that God has given you, find it!  Find it and develop that skill, make it grow, through your sweat and tears and by the mercy of God.

“To those who use well what they are given, even more will be given, and they will have an abundance.  But from those who do nothing, even what little they have, will be taken away.”  (Matthew 25:29)

Second, what do you enjoy?  What makes you happy?  Ever go into a classroom and discover that the teacher doesn’t want to be there?  The teacher hates students and teaching?  But what about that teacher you had, who was so passionate about his/her work?  What about that teacher who loved every single student and you could tell that every single day was important?  Huge difference; because you enjoy what you do.

These two steps build on each other.  If you are happy with what you do in life, you will do it better.  If you are good at what you do, you will be happy.  And when you are good AND happy at what you do in life, you will be a BLESSING TO OTHERS!  This is the evidence that you are “in sync” with God.  And this is the will of God for your life.

“Seek the Kingdom of God, above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.”  (Matthew 6:33)
