Back to Basics
KAYAMM is a missionary movement plan that I have been attending for the past 3 years. Every year there are always speakers, pastors, and themes that get me on a spiritual high for about a few weeks until I go back to my regular pattern of things. This year I did get on that spiritual high and it feels great. The only major distinguishable factor is that this year as East Coast HS KAYAMM First Batch they gave us a mission to start at home and become great leaders at home and then move on to church and school.
At KAYAMM I learned the basics of being a leader and a Christian. Basics that I knew but had never put into practice. I relearned to read the Bible and will continue to do so through a guide given to all students to follow throughout the year. I relearned to have earnest, sincere, grateful, praiseful, joyful, and serious prayer. I relearned to have devotions. I relearned the 66 books of the Bible from Genesis to Revelation. I relearned Psalms 23, “The Lord is my Shepherd”. I relearned the Lord’s Prayer, “Our Father which art in Heaven”. I relearned the 10 commandments. I knew them before, but because of KAYAMM I now grasp these ideas and actions that are needed for my walk with Christ.
While at KAYAMM we held a VBS for 4 days with us high school students as leaders. Those 4 days I got to experience what all the leaders I had in the past from other KAYAMMS and Camp Meetings experienced. Being a leader for 60 kids ages 4-11 was completely different than what I thought it would be. I learned to have much patience and realized that I needed to change myself so that I could serve the kids as well as other people in my life.
Being put into action really prepared me for what I do now at my local church. Before Kayamm I didn’t really know what it meant to be a leader and only knew how to be led. I am now the children’s coordinator at Chicago Unity Church and I don’t believe it would have been possible without being educated first at HS Kayamm. Kayamm prepared me for what would be next and I now have a plan for my kids to grow in Christ and be future leaders for God. I pray that I am worthy of teaching God’s word.
