Introduction to Truths to Live By

In June 2022, I was praying for an opportunity to write, because writing had always brought me so much joy but I had neglected it for a long time due to a myriad of excuses. I promised God that the next time I was given a chance to write, that I would say yes.
A few days later, I was forwarded an email by Nathan Brown, editor at Signs Publishing, inviting individuals to pitch an idea for a sharing book—a book that church members could use to share aspects of what we believe with their friends and neighbours.
I knew this was not only an answer to prayer, but an opportunity to create content that could spark conversations and connections for believers with non-believers.
Many wonderful books about Christianity and Adventism already exist, for those who are interested in learning what the Bible claims. I wanted to write a book for those who are not yet willing to examine what the Bible offers, but who may be open to some self-reflection leading to spiritual discovery.
So I developed the idea of writing a “secular devotional book”—30 short reflections, stories of inspiring individuals who have embodied values that not only resonate with secular readers but also challenge them to ponder where those values came from, and who they ultimately point us towards.
I have also shared some of my personal experiences; sharing my own journey, struggles and joys have always been a part of my ministry philosophy, both in public speaking, as well in personal conversations. I cannot expect people to consider my ideas and worldview, if I am not willing to share who I am. During my 19 years in local church ministry, I have observed across multiple communities and cultures, that when people relate with and trust who we are, we can have more productive conversations about what we believe.
I also told my life story because this book is about people who have personally inspired and impacted me. Their commitment to kindness, integrity, and service have shaped who I am today and who I am striving to become tomorrow. Framing their stories within my personal journey, hopefully contextualises why their contributions are so meaningful.
I hope that as individuals read this book with their family and friends, that they foster a deeper connection with each other while pausing to reflect on what matters...for a life that matters.
