What is Lent?

What is Lent? And should Adventists observe this religious event?
50, F, NY

"Lent is a solemn religious observance in the liturgical calendar of many Christian denominations that begins on Ash Wednesday and covers a period of approximately six weeks before Easter.  The traditional purpose of Lent is the preparation of the believer through prayer, penance, repentance of sins, almsgiving, atonement and self-denial." (Wikipedia)

Along with Easter and other religious holidays, Lent was created by the Roman Catholic Church.  Religious customs that have arisen from the traditions of man cannot be found in the Bible.  Many traditions are linked to Jewish events such as Passover, but these traditions have no basis or authority from Scripture.  Many religious holidays, (Easter, Christmas, etc.) have their roots in mixing pagan worship with Christian events.  Thus, many sincere Christians are misled to believe that religious holidays created by mankind are of divine origin.  The birth of Christ is Scriptural, thus we celebrate the birth of Jesus on Christmas. Christ was crucified, and rose from the grave, thus we have Easter.  These are innocent enough Christian traditions that deny the authority of Scripture and confuse many people down the wrong path.

As the appearing of Christ in the clouds of glory is imminent, it is important for all of God's people to closely follow the word of God, and not the traditions of man.  Proverbs 16:25 says, "There is a way that seems right to a man, but it's end is the way of death."  Many people of the world today, including Christians, fail to follow the word of God in their lives. The result of this is Babylon, which means "confusion."  This is the ultimate plan of Satan to keep God's people out of the Bible.  1 John 4:1 says, "Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world."

Instead of denying self for 40 days and fasting from something in your life, such as soda or Facebook, the important and crucial step that God's people must take is denying self and surrendering totally to the will of God.  If we do this, then God will reveal to us, what exactly we should be fasting from.  2 Chronicles 20:20 says, "Believe in the Lord your God, so shall you be established; believe His prophets, so shall you prosper."

What you believe in is what you will follow.  Do not follow the traditions of man, but believe in the words of God.
